Chapter One : the beginning of a nightmare...
The nature was angry... or maybe just sad...
It was a very cold, rainy day. It was so dark, that you might thought that the clouds would’ve ripped the sky, crossed from time to time by a lightning .The wind was whispering words that were not understandable. All these made that day a little scarier than a usual day.
In that very day, the Pricket family, Caitlin, her son, Brian, and her husband, Ryan, were moving in another town. What Brian couldn’t understand was why were they replacing their nice hometown, with a dark scary town, with a silly name, Sunsetville. Anyway, Sunsetville wasn’t like a sunset, peaceful and romantic, it was very dark (maybe because of the clouds), wet (maybe because of the rain), cold ( the wind?), and scary.
After a few hours of driving, Ryan said victoriously, more cheerful than he actually was:
“Well, here we are! “
“Yes, wonderful”, taught Brian.
“Brian, honey, are you all right?” asked Caitlin. “You look rather… pale. Is there something wrong?”
“I’m fine, mom.” said Brian and grinned.
“Are you sure you’re ok?”
“Never better!”
Caitlin observed the sarcasm from her son’s voice, but didn’t say anything. After all, the house wasn’t so bad, it looked rather old, but ok, she taught.
But Brian wouldn’t agree with her.
"This house is old!" taught Brian. "So old that it stinks! Gosh, what a smell!... "
As they were moving their luggage inside the house, they all observed how weird this house was. Each room looking just like a library, no electricity, just candles ("How am I going to listen music, Moooom?!"), very uncomfortable beds... Caitlin was the most enthusiastic of them all.
"Hey, guys,” she told them, ” this house isn't that bad, after all! It's quite big and I'm sure Ryan will do something with the electricity..."
"Right!" said Ryan, trying to be as enthusiast as her.
Ryan was Caitlin’s second husband. Her first husband, Brian’s Dad, had left her when she was still pregnant. And so, Brian never had a chance to meet his father. But he didn’t give a damn. The only reason he would have wanted to meet his father was probably to give him the middle finger, for what he’s done to him, and especially to his mother, which Brian loved very much.
He was now actually calling Ryan “Dad”, and that was not because somebody told him so. His mother actually told him to call Ryan however he wishes, "but in a decent mode".
That evening, everybody got asleep more early than usual. Even Brian, who was scandalized that he couldn't watch TV that night, or just chat with his friends in the internet. He'd eventually go to sleep after his mother reminded him that he had an iPod. Oh, he'd forgotten about it!
At about midnight, Brian woke up a little scared. He dreamed an old man telling him something. He couldn't remember what....
"Stupid nightmares!" he said, and then he left the bed in order to go and drink some water.
As he entered the kitchen, he thought he heard something behind him.
"God, these nightmares make me hear things..."
"Edward..."
The glass full of water fell from Brian's hand.
"Who's there?"asked Brian, a little scared.(a little more actually).
"Edward..."
It was a whisper coming from the bathroom, which was right in front of the kitchen.
"Haah, Dad, this is not funny!"
The whisper stopped. Brian ran in his room, and eventually fell asleep. The next morning, he thought it was just a dream. But the glass was still on the kitchen floor...
"I must be imaging things..." thought Brian...

Chapter two - the Deaths
Brian was a 16 year old adolescent, with negru hair and grey eyes. He wasn’t a very tall guy, but you couldn’t say that he was small either. He enjoyed skating, chatting with his friends, and music. He didn’t like agitation at all; he would rather prefer a quiet place. Although his new town was quiet, he didn’t like it very much.
From that day, they had electricity, and that was a reason for Brian to be happy. At least until he found out that their moody neighbours were having lunch at their house, and so he couldn’t chat with his friends, or call them, or listen music, or watch TV.
The Carter family was living right across the street. John Carter was a police officer, and Eileen Carter was a housewife. They had a daughter, Julie, who was adopted by them, because they couldn’t have babies. Julie didn’t came to the Pricket house, that disturbed Brian, because he was now forced to stay and listen boring stories about how many thieves were in Sunsetville lately, and which is the divin way to bake an apple pie. But then, he had a very bright idea!
“Excuse me, Mom,” he said, more polite than he ever been, “I finished my meal, can I go to my room and –umm- read?”
Caitlin was surprised, but she said “Of course, honey” and Brian left them in the kitchen to discuss boring things without him.
Of course he didn’t wanted to read, but he was so bored, that the only thing he could do was reading. He grabbed the first book from the (giant) library from his room and, well, began to read.
The book he was reading was called “The Book Of Death”.
“Uuuu, how scary…” laughed Brian.
It was about a rich family, the Death family (“What a strange name for a family… just like Sunsetville for a town…”). The last descendant of the Deaths, Edward Death, had been kidnapped. And since then, the town was peace less. Richard Death, Edward’s father, had search for him since the day he disappeared, ‘till the day he committed suicide. The day of Richard’s death was very dark, because almost all men living in that town committed suicide in that very day. And it’s been told that they’re haunting the town, and Richard is still looking for his son…
“How sad…” taught Brian. “I think that town must be way more interesting than this Sunsetville…”
Meanwhile, in the kitchen…
“So, Caitlin, how do you like this house?”asked Eileen.
Everybody remained silent, as Caitlin was preparing to answer.
“Well, the house is ok.”she answered.”But it’s a little bit… different too, with so many books…”
She didn’t want to call the house “strange and scary”.
“Oh yes,” said Eileen, “the previous owners really enjoyed reading. They really liked to read good-night stories to their son. And they love the house and the town, until…”
“Until what?” asked Caitlin, after a few seconds of silence. “Eileen?”
“Until their son disappeared.” answered John. “they had always thought that he was kidnapped, but we think that e ran away. And we are not the only ones. He hated this place… nobody knows why. And so, they had search for him until the old man died. He cursed the town, and in that very day almost all men committed suicide. Just like him… yup, that was Richard Death. He died in the bathroom… and speaking about bathrooms, where is it? I really need to-”
“Right in front of the kitchen…” said Caitlin. She looked at Ryan. Were the Carters trying to scare them? Or that was a true story?
“It’s true.” said John, after he returned from the bathroom. “My father lived where we live now, when the tragedy happened. My grandfather committed suicide too. This story is as real as my socks!”
Ryan knew then that Caitlin was thinking at the same thing: these people were crazy…

Chapter three – Julie Regall
As he read the book, Brian was more convinced that the book was nothing but “a big fat lie”, even if the author signed himself as “B. Death”. But at least it was a good book. It described the “true” life of the “Deaths”, and that Ed Death really reminded Brian about himself. Edward was a very shy person, and that was the only difference between him and Brian. And maybe the way he looked like (the book didn’t have any photos of the “Deaths”). Edward didn’t enjoy very much studying, reading, but he liked sports and music.
But one day, (19th May 1957, according to the book), he simply disappeared, letting her father all alone (his mother died when he was like four years old, at least that was what the book said). His father looked for him, helped by all the locals, but he simply didn’t show up. So, his father committed suicide, coursing all the town, taking with him in the grave like half of the town’s locals.
There was a genealogical tree. Starting with John (1880) and Mary (1884) Death, it was continuing with their three children, Elizabeth (1919), Bill (1919) and Richard (1920) (“God, this is oooold!!”). Elizabeth and Bill seemed not to have any children, but Richard married Elizabeth Carpe(1921) (“Huh? C-A-R-P-E?...interesting…”), and had a boy, Edward (1941). Elizabeth had a younger sister, Carla (1922), who married Johann Regall, and had Christopher (1944) and Elena (1946). Elena had Diana (1964) (“All alone?... Bitch), and Christopher married Kathleen (1940), older than him, and had five children. From these five children, only one seemed to get married, Peter, the eldest,(1962), with another Mary (1962) and had Julie in 1991…
“That Julie – erm… Regall - is 16, like me, if she’s still alive. I guess this B. Death is Bill, and he died like years ago… or maybe not.”
As a final note, B. Death had written: “This book shall be done when the final Death descendant will die.”
That evening, the only thing Brian had think about was that book, which he finally thought it was real. But he didn’t tell his parents about it. He’d even searched on the net about that Julie Regall, and found out that she was real… Her parents died on a car crash, and she was at an orphanage. At least in the year of the accident, when she was like six years old. And Brian remembered that the Carters said that they adopted Julie… Julie Regall?
That night Brian didn’t sleep very well. Eventually, at about 2 AM, he left the bed and went to the kitchen. And it heard it again.
“Edward…”
Once again, the whisper scared Brian, and he answered without thinking.
“I’m not Edward!”
“Welcome back, son…” the whisper continued.
“Who are you?” cried Brian. “What do you want? Why don’t you leave me alone?” his calling turned into a desperate scream, and Caitlin came to him looking very scared.
“Honey what wrong?”
She hugged him, and Brian seemed to come back to Earth.
“It- it was a voice…”
Ryan appeared from the dormitory.
“What voice, Brian?” he asked, looking a little scared, too.
“A- a man’s voice. Co- coming from the- the bathroom!”
Caitlin and Ryan looked at each other. Could’ve been true, then?
“Just… go to sleep, honey”, she finally said. “We’ll talk about it in the morning, maybe”, she continued, with a smile.
Brian tried to sleep, but the result was just another bunch of nightmares. So, the next morning, he was very tired. But he had other things in his mind, beside that stupid voice.
So this Julie Regall had something to do with this “Death” family, which meant that she must’ve known something about it… But was this Julie Carter borned Julie Regall? Well, there was only one way to find out…
“Good morning, Mrs. Carter!” said Brian, as Eileen Carter opened the door. “Is Julie home?”
“Good morning, Brian!” answered Eileen Carter, smiling. “I’m afraid she went to the library. Oh, this girl surely enjoys reading!”
“Great, a nerdy one…”
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, I- I guess I’ll… go to the library too. Yes. You know, I really, really love reading, uh-hum, it’s definitely my passion!” said Brian, with a very convincing look. “And now, I have the chance to- to meet her, er- Julie. Great! Thank you. Mrs. Carter. Have a good day!”
“Have a good day dear…” she said, with a suspicious look.
Brian left a little upset, as he was going to the library.
“Funny boy,” said Eileen after she closed the door, looking through the kitchen window at Brian. “A little strange, I’d say”.
As he was heading to the library, Brian was thinking very hard.
“Why? Why does she have to be a nerdy one? Why?... Or maybe she just… simply… reads a lot… Just!” he sighed.
He reached, finally, the library. A very tall building, with golden letters scripting
The Sunsetville Library
“Very impressing” said Brian and entered.
The library was very big, with dozens, maybe hundreds of shells, and tall windows. There were armchairs, tables and chair everywhere, where people could read in silence. Looking at the “Modern Literature” section, Brian realized that he didn’t even knew how Julie actually looked like.
“Great…”
Was he supposed to ask every one in the WHOLE library, then?
“Name?”
“Carter. Julie Carter”
She was talking with the librarian, borrowing about seven books.
“Er- Julie?” Brian called her.
She looked at the boy who was calling her. She had long black hair, brown eyes, pretty face, and she was dressed in a short stripped skirt, with an assorted T-shirt.
“Yes?” she asked, a little confused.
“Erm… Well, hello. My name is Brian Pricket-“
“Excuse me, Brian Pickle ”, loudly said an old lady from her chair.”I’m trying to read something over here. So please, be quiet!”
“It’s Pricket, and ok, madam…”
Brian and Julie left the library together.
“So,” said Julie, “You’re living in the Death house?”
Brian was surprised. He didn’t told her anything yet, and he was expecting other reaction, like “I don’t believe you”.
“Yeah”, he said, “How d’you know?”
Julie smiled.
“It’s obvious. You are new here. And the only empty house ‘round here was, well, Deaths’ house.”
Brian hesitated a little, and asked:
“D’you know anything about the –er- Deaths? I mean, like, if they really existed ?”, accentuating the last word.
Julie looked scared and wounded.
“Of course they existed .” she answered, accentuating the same last word. And then completed quickly, before Brian could say anything: “And I dunno anything about them! What d’you want to know, anyway?”
“Er-I – nothing.”
She was so determined, that she made Brian not so confident.
“So, then, why did you asked?”
“I- for nothing; you know, just like that.” he said, with an unconvincing grin.
She looked at him doubtfully, with her arms full of books, and said:
“See you tomorrow at school. I’d like to stay and chat, but I got a very long stupid and very interesting project to do. Buh-bye!”
“See ya....”
Only then, he noticed that they were in front of her house. “She must’ve used a shortcut or something”, he taught. And then he observed that the next day was his first day at his new school, and that the library wasn’t closed on Sunday!
“Damn! This town really is a mess!”
That night, Brian slept well for the first time in that house. But he was a little upset that he didn’t found out whether Julie Carter is Julie Regall or not.
The whispers didn’t disturb him for a while, so he forgot about them (not totally). He had other things in his mind.
The first day of school was just fine. Beside the fact that he had an enormous amount of homework to do. But not only homework was in his mind. Right from that day, their Math teacher, Professor Bill Awkward, put him and Julie in the same desk, with the reason that Julie was the only one Brian knew. She looked as if it was not fair at all, but she accepted. She adopted a very cold and distant attitude.
They went home together, and Brian asked her again if she knew anything about the Deaths.
“Why do you keep asking me things about those dead people?!” she asked, with a desperate air.
“Because!... I’m curious…”
“About what?”
“I-“
Brian didn’t know… to tell her now?
“Tell me! Now!” she said, with an imperative tone.
Okay. She asked for it.
“Because I found that family’s genealogical tree, and some Julie Regall borned in ’91 was written there, And i-“ said Brian quite fast, but forgetting what he wanted actually to know.
“Yes?”
“I-… I… well, I-… I was wondering if you… you know…”
“If I am…”
“Julie!”
They were again in front of her house, and Mrs. Carter was calling her.
“Oh-er-Brian, I have to go, but here’s my number, call me in about an hour. Bye… coming Eileen!”
“…b…bye…”
Julie said all that incredibly fast, as she was writing her mobile phone number on a little piece of paper. Brian didn’t notice when she put (strained) that little piece of paper in his hand, only when he wanted to open the door of his home.
He was home-alone. Ryan and Caitlin were both at work. Ryan was a software engineer, and Caitlin was a layer.
Brian expected for that hour to pass, and when it did, he called Julie anxiously.
“Hello?”
“Hello, Julie, this is Brian.”
“Oh… Hi.”
“Hi… erm… so, about that-“
“Listen” she interrupted him. “You know I was adopted, right?”
“Uh-hum.”
“Well, I was like six years old when my parents had a car accident. I was waiting for them to pick me up from a pet exposition. I’d won the first place, I mean not me, my cat, but whatever… And I waited ‘till like seven o’clock. And then, my nanny, who was in holiday by the time, came to pick me up. I remember how I asked “Where’s Mummy? And Daddy?”… Eventually I found out that…” (She was crying).
“I’m sorry…”said Brian, who didn’t know what else to say.
“Sorry,” she excused herself. “But… let’s say that I still miss them very much. And… erm… you know… my last name was “Regall”, but with double “L”…”
“What?” cried Brian. “Are you kiddin’?” He could not believe what he was hearing.
“Oh sorry” he apologized, realizing that he was very rude. “Well, thank you for telling me that-“
“Oh Brian,” she interrupted him once again. “I’m so sorry, I got to go, Beth’s calling me.”
“Beth? Who’s-“
“Bye!” she said and she closed the phone.
Great. Brian finally found Julie Regall. All he had to do was… well, he didn’t know exactly, but probably he’d figure out the next day. Now, he had work to do! About three miles of homework! _________________ ...cross my heart and hope to...

Part four – a ghost attack
“So, Julie, er-… I don’t know how to say it…”
“Well, Brian, maybe on a lower voice” she answered.
It was Saturday morning, and they were at a table in the library, doing their homework, with several books in front of them.
“Right” he said. “Well, did you know that you are related to, you know, the Deaths?”
“No, I didn’t. I never had anyone. Only them” she said. “My parents”, she added, seeing Brian’s confused face. “Not even here, in Sunsetville. You are the first friend I ever had here.” she said and smiled to him. “Everyone considers me a freak over here…”
“Well, you are a freak,” Brian said, “if the first place you go with your first friend is the library.”
Julie giggled.
“Well, this is like the only place where Eileen lets me go, beside school.”
“Why do you call her on her name?” asked Brian curious. “I mean, why don’t you call her ‘Mom’?.... I call Ryan ‘Dad’ and he’s not my real father.”
Julie looked both wounded and maybe shocked.
“I can’t betray my parents!” she said. “If you can, well, I am happy for you.”
“Hey, I didn’t want to upset you!” Brian said. “And… I never had a Dad. That bastard left Mom while she was still-“
Brian’s mobile rang then.
“Oh, sorry.” He looked at the angry faces around him. “Sorry…” He looked at the phone. “It’s Mom… I wonder what-“
“Just go outside and answer” said Julie, with a begging look.
“Oh-I guess you’re right… Excuse-“
“Stop talking and get the hell out, Pickle!” said that old lady (cried actually) from her chair, lady which Brian met days before.
“It’s PRICKET!”
“OUT!”
He ran out.
“Hello?”
“Hello, sweetie.” Answered a crying voice.
“Mom! What’s wrong?”
“We are at the hospital-“
“What? What happened?”
“It’s Ryan. He… He had an… an accident. It’s quite serious.”
Brian was stunned.
“How… how serious?” he asked, without thinking.
“Pretty bad…”
“I’m coming over there!”
“Ok, honey, take care…”
He closed, and ran into the library.
“Julie! “ he said, forgetting to keep his voice down. “We have to go to the hospital. It’s Dad!”
“We’ll go with Eileen’s car!”
“Shh!” completed the old lady.
After about fifteen minutes, Brian, Julie and Eileen were at the Sunsetville Hospital, talking with Caitlin.
The hospital had three floors, and it was all painted in white. It was nice, warm and clean.
“How it happened, Mom?” asked Brian, rather terrified.
“He could’ve die.” answered Caitlin, who was fighting with her tears. “It was a little strange, actually.”
“What do you mean, strange, dear?” asked Eileen, confused, just like everybody else.
“Not just strange.” Caitlin said “I just can’t explain how it happened. He was taking a shower. I just suddenly heard him scream “Who’s there? It’s that you, Cait?” and then he called me desperate. I went to the bathroom as fast as I could, and then… he was there, on the floor, full of blood. He didn’t seem to be conscious. The mirror was broken, and there were pieces of it everywhere, mostly on Ryan’s body… on his face… there was blood everywhere… I called the ambulance, and they asked me to tell them… how it happened… but I couldn’t explain them, because I didn’t know how!” she was crying again.
“Oh, Caitlin” said Eileen, with her hand on Caitlin’s shoulder “He’ll be all right”
A door had been opened, and a doctor came. He was a black man.
“Hello, Mrs. Pricket, I’m Dr. Vain.”
“How’s Ryan?” she asked, scared, ignoring his introducing.
“Well, he suffered some serious injuries. Mostly on his head, and face. Now, I don’t want to scare you, madam, but your husband was either attacked, or wanted to commit suicide.”
“Suicide?” repeated Caitlin, amazed. “Ryan? Suicide? Dr. Vain, but he… I don’t think you know what you’re saying! Ryan would never-“
“I just told you what we’ve found out after the investigation.” Interrupted Dr/ Vain. “He’ll be all right, if you don’t count the scars. Now, if you excuse me,I got stuff to do! Good day!”
“Thank you, Dr. Vain.” Said Brian, and then turned to his mother.
“Mom,” he said, “I have to go home. I’ll be back, I promise!”
“T-take care, honey!” she said and kissed him on his cheek.
“Julie, could you-“
“Of course,” she said. “I won’t ask Eileen this time”
And they left.
“Julie, where in the world do you think you’re going?” asked, Eileen, upset and deranged that Julie made a move without her approbation.
“Leave them , Eileen.” Caitlin said. “They’re just going to our place.”
“Maybe you’re right, Caitlin.” Said Eileen, still deranged. “Coffee?”
“I’d like some, thank you” said Caitlin, thinking if she really did the good thing letting Brian and Julie go to their house…

Part five - Beth
As they reached Brian’s house. Brian rushed to the bathroom.
“Brian, what-“asked Julie confused.
“I’ll explain later” he said and entered the bathroom.
“Oh… I understand…”said Julie, who thought she understood. “But, you know, there where bathrooms at the hospital, we didn’t-“
“Where are you?” Shouted Brian into the bathroom.
“No, I don’t understand…” Julie corrected.
“What did you do to my father?”
“He’s not… your father.”
Julie screamed.
“What-“
“Shh! Julie!” Brian said, and returned to his conversation. “No, he’s not. My father’s a bastard, I don’t know where the hell he-“
“I am your father, Edward!” said the voice, loudly for the first time. “He’s no father of yours, he’s the bastard, that’s why he must disappear! He doesn’t care about you! I DO! WHY did you run away, Edward, why? Do you know how much I suffered?”
“But I am not-“
“Yes, you are! A father always recognizes his son! “
“But I am not your son! How could I be?! “
The voice disappeared.
“Who the hell are you?! Tell me!... tell me… “ said Brian and started to cry.
Julie entered the bathroom, even if she was scared [of it].
“It’s okay, Brian, It’s gonna be all right…”
“No, it’s not gonna be. “said Brian, with his tears pathetically drowning in his mouth. “He’s gonna come here, and kill my entire family, and the ones I love! “
“No, he’s not, Brian.” Said Julie. “I know someone who can help us.”
Brien noticed that she said “us”. Maybe she really knew someone.
“Who?” asked Brian, looking at her.
“Miranda Fire.”
“Who’s that?”
Julie smiled.
“That old lady from the library. The one that calls you ‘Pickle’. C’mon. Let’s go at her house and see how she can help…” Julie hesitated, but then completed : “…us”.
****
After about a half an hour, they were in Miranda Fire’s house, at her table, drinking a cup of tea.
“So, tell me again, Julie” said Miranda, “Why are you and pick-Brian here?”
“There had been a ghost attack, Miranda” said Julie quickly. Brian noticed that he was the only one calling Miranda ‘Mrs. Fire’.
“Hmmm….”said Miranda, mysteriously.”You said Ryan’s in hospital, right?”
“Yes,” answered Julie. “but he’ll be all right, just some scars, I guess.”
“And no one knows how it happened?”
“Listen, Mrs. Fire”, said Brian, annoyed. “We told you all we know. Can you please help us?” he added, insisting on the word ‘please’.
Miranda looked at Brian, rather tired.
“Yes, I s’pose I can” she said, swallowing some tea. “I’d like to talk with this Richard of yours-“
“He often appears in our bathroom, but we don’t actually know that he’s Rich-“
“No!” said Miranda, dramatically, “I want…” she looked at Brian as if her tea was too hot, and it was just his fault. “…to atingere it... in a session!”
Brian and Julie looked scared.
“Don’t be afraid” said Miranda, “if it says you’re his son, it won’t hurt you, right? And it’s obvious that it’s Richard. He called you “Edward, son”, right?”
Brian noticed that Miranda called Richard ‘it’, as if it was an object, and he started not to trust her that much…
“But Miranda”, said Julie, a little shocked, “What’s Beth going to say? She told me not to contact anyone from the Deaths, it may be dangerous…”
“Oh, never mind her.”
“Wait a minute,” said Brian, confused, remembering his phone conversation with Julie. “Who’s this Beth?”
“Oh, I forgot to tell you, Brian.” Said Julie. “Beth is, well, a ghost, from my house. She was… is… well, was Richard Death’s sister, and she died very young, at sixteen years old. I dunno why. She died at my place, John’s Grandfather was a doctor. She had a twin brother, Bill Death or something like-“
“Why didn’t you tell me?” asked Brian, even more annoyed.
“I forgot.” Said Julie, simply. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realized that it was imp-“
“You forgot!” cried Brian. “And that Beth, didn’t she tell you you’re a Death?”
“Well, no, she didn-“
“And that Beth, couldn’t she help us- help me – with her brother?! Huh?!”
“Brian! Listen to me! Beth and Richard weren’t the closest friends, they were-“
“I don’t CARE! “ Shouted Brian. “SHE COULD’VE HELP, AND YOU KNEW THAT! BUT NOW LOOK! RYAN’S IN HOSPITAL! BECAUSE YOU ‘FORGOT’ TO TELL ME ABOUT THAT B-B-BETH! ALL THIS TIME YOU HAD THE SOLUTION OF MY PROBLEM-“
“BRIAN!” cried Julie. “REMIND YOURSELF THAT YOU HAVEN’T TOLD ME ABOUT YOUR GHOST TIL NOW, BEFORE YOU ACCUSE ME, PLEASE!”
Brian settled down. She was right. All that time, Miranda watched the fight, swallowing tea, looking rather bored.
“Well,” she finally said. “I guess you have now your solution, so get out of my house before you wake Stephen.”
“Oh,” said Julie. “We are very sorry, Miranda, we just-“
“Believe me, I don’t care.” interrupted Miranda. “Now, out.”
“Good bye, and thanks for-“said Julie, but Miranda snapped the door in her face. “- your help?” she continued.
“All right, I’m sorry.” Said Brian.
“Like you mean it” said Julie, doubtfully. “Anyway, now we’d better go to my place to talk with Beth. I hope Eileen’s still at the hospital with your mother…”
“Listen, Julie”, said Brian ashamed a little, “who is Stephen? Fire’s husband or what?”
Julie giggled.
“You really think she had someone in her life?... Stephen is her dog.”
“Oh,” said Brian, surprised. “She seems to be very protective with that dog.”
“Yeah… He is all she has.”
“Why was she talking about … hmm… About Richard as if Richard was an object?”
“No idea. “said Julie simply. “Ask her… or… you’d better don’t.:
“Right. And how are we supposed to talk with this Beth?”
“Well, if she doesn’t answer, we’ll use my mom’s Ouija board.”
“You mean, Eileen?”
“No.” she said, angry. “ I mean Mary, my mother.”
“Oh… and… and wassat, Uja board?”
“The Ouija board helps you contact a spirit, dude.” Said Julie, feeling wiser than she already was. “But I don’t think we’ll need it.”
“But how do you know that?” said Brian, who couldn’t stand Julie’s tone.
“I know her.” said Julie, loosing her wisely tone.
After another few minutes, they were at Julie’s house. Fortunately, there was no body home… at least no one Brian could see.
Julie’s home was very interesting. It looked as if a small part of the past was stolen and hidden there. There were tall windows, and dirty walls, covered with paintings. Beside a quite big library, there was a portrait of a boy, a teenager, who looked just like-
“Beth?” asked Julie with a normal voice. “Are you here? I gotta talk to you. We must help Brian. Can you hear me?”
Beyond a wardrobe, a voice came, muttering something not understandable.
“What? Can you repeat that, please?”
“…He’s not Brian…”
“What? What do you-?”asked Julie, confused. “He’s our neighbor, Brian”
“N-nice to-to meet you, Beth.” said Brian, who didn’t know what else to say.
“He’s not Brian, Julie.” Said a young, clear, girl’s voice. “He’s Edward.”
